2. Installation notes

Make sure to download the correct Pichat version for your operating system:

  • Windows: available as chat software, i386 compatible CPU
On Linux extract Pichat with the command 'tar -xvf pichat_linux32.tgz' from a console window, then start it with './pichatd'. Pichat runs automatically in background, all settings can be changed in the '~/.pichat/pichat.ini' file.
On Windows double click Pichat to extract and start it. You can change your personal settings by clicking on 'Options' (hotkey Ctrl+Shift+O), most settings are automatically detected at the first start.
To uninstall simply delete all Pichat files or use 'Add/Remove programs' in your operating system. For further information please see Pichat website in the information section.

3. Security advice and firewall

It's highly recommend that you do not run Pichat without a proper protection on the Internet. Make sure to have a firewall software installed and that only selected software is allowed to connect to the Internet. If you are having connection problems first allow Pichat to connect to the Internet, secondly enable incoming connections on your router or cable modem. Pichat uses the following ports: 9009/TCP and 80/TCP (in default settings). When working at office or other places with restricted internet access you might have to configure proxy settings. It's best to consult a networking specialist or your internet provider for help.
Please update Pichat and your operating system regularly. Apply all security patches, run anti-virus and anti-spyware software frequently. Be cautious when setting up a public chat, it's not recommend to run a public chat service without a proper firewall and regular software updates! Do not chat unprotected!
